Topic-tastic Thursday!
We've been getting to grips with our topic- Our Parks, Our Place- today. First of all we went to Harling Park with Room 15 and had to buddy up and go on a picture hunt to answer questions about the features of Harling Park. Then we sat at the tea house and made a plan of what we could see. In the afternoon we delivered a Harling Park survey to the houses along Upper Weld Street and Mountain View Road. The other classes in the Kowhai Syndicate are also delivering surveys to different streets around our school. We want to find out who is using Harling Park, what they are using it for and what they like about it. We also want to know if they have any suggestions for how it could be improved. We can't wait to find out the results!

Mythical Creatures
On Tuesday, when I was away, Mrs Muir worked with the class on designing and writing about their own Mythical Creatures. The task was to think about the combination of animal body parts, whether the creature was good or bad, where it lived and if it had any special powers. The children also had to include some great Wow words! We hope you enjoy these wonderful pictures and descriptions.

Grandma McGarvey Character Descriptions
We've enjoyed reading the Grandma McGarvey books over the last couple of weeks, and last week the children wrote a character description of Grandma McGarvey. Here are 3 fantastic ones!
Grandma McGarvey is an outdoor person. She wears a skirt that is purple and a T-shirt that is red. Her face is all wrinkly and chubby and her tummy is very fat. Grandma McGarvey says, “What should we I do today?” She doesn’t sit down on a chair knitting.
By Georgie
Grandma McGarvey is a magnificent 90 year old lady that is always on the run. She is very funky and adventurous. Everything has to be exciting for her. Whether it’s sky diving or jumping off the highest diving board, she can do anything. She wears funky stripy and colourful clothes, with dull grey hair that is all frizzy. Her skin is all wrinkly and baggy. She says things like, “I’m bored!” and “Can you do me a favour?” also “That was fun.” She always goes wild and loves doing crazy things. She is amazing.

Grandma McGarvey is a fat adventurer and sometimes goes completely bonkers. She has an awesome dog. She wears funky creepy clothes and is different. She has got grey curly hair and has glasses. “Give me my sausages.” is something she says. She plays swimming and rugby. That’s brilliant.

If I had a Thousand Dollars....
We did our first "Rapid Writing" session this week. The children have 10 minutes to write on a topic- hopefully one that will spark their imagination! They write in silence and this encourages total concentration. The aim of Rapid Writing is to increase the speed with which the children can get their ideas down on paper and to help them see that they can have fun with their writing!
I would get all the kids a new playground. I would buy Mum and Dad a cat as well as a dog. I would buy lots of Lotto tickets for my family and friends. I would pay Mum’s bills. I would also buy a little kid a toy. I would also get Mum, Dad and James a 4 story house. I would pay my cousin Dylan’s piano lessons. I would even pay my bill for school. But most of all get my brother whatever he wants.
By Alyssa
I would buy my brothers a huge ball that opens in half so that they can catch creepy crawlys in it and when they have caught heaps, they can take off the lid very carefully and climb inside it and run around like a hamster on a hamster wheels. If they found some water snails they would have to fill it up with water and then they wouldn’t be able to give them a ride. Sometimes went hey want them to get out they have to open it and the water would flood the garden.

The Memory of a Fountain
Week 8's writing task was to use a short video called "The Memory of a Fountain," as inspiration.

The last drop of water falls from the tap to complete my giant body. I am full of water, I know because I hear the water swishing inside of me. Desperately I clench the sink and try pull myself out! I turn to the mirror in front of me. How did I get here? As I plod down the stairs I feel lost, almost as though I have been alive once before. I try to go for a stroll, but I am shouted at because I am different. I thought being different means you are special, but from
this experience I know it means I can’t be accepted.By Jessica Down
