Edwin Fox
The Edwin Fox was a fantastic experience and we learnt heaps about what life was like for the Early Settlers who made the journey from the UK to New Zealand. Thanks so much to the parents who made the trip possible! If of you have photos you could share please e-mail them to me. Thank you.

Awesome Day!!!
Wow Room 16 had a great day today!
First of all we got a package in the post containing a book and a really cool card from Jenny Hessell, the author of the Grandma McGarvey books.
After that who could believe that the day could get any better but then Room 16 performed their Haka with Room 13 and Room 15 so confidently in assembly. I was very very proud of them, especially the fabulous leaders at the front- well done boys!
Then I had to leave assembly but I heard that Room 16 won for the class that brought in the most Gala donations!!
to everyone in Room 16 for a great day and a great week. Have a lovely weekend everyone and see you on Monday! :-)

Wonderful writing!
We have started an exciting writing programme this week which will continue until the end of the term. Room 16 are working with children in Room 13 and Room 15. Some children will be taught by Mrs Joshi and some children will have a mixture of me, Miss Meyrick and Mrs Herdman. Each week there will be a different writing focus for each group.
Koby was working with me this week. We focused on letter writing and wrote two different kinds of letters- one a very creative letter and the other to Mr Hewson! For our first letter we read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" and then wrote a letter to one of the crayons to beg them to come back!

Jemimah is an "independent worker" and gets feedback from me on Hapara each night and a chat about her work in the morning. Her task for the week was to write at least 3 paragraphs about a mythical creature.

E-mail from an author!
I couldn't believe it when the husband of the author of the Grandma McGarvey books just happened to be visiting our school last week! When he heard that we had been writing character descriptions of Grandma McGarvey he just had to come and have a look and when he saw the fabulous writing he asked me to send some of them to his wife, Jenny Hessell. Here is the e-mail I received back from Jenny! I've also uploaded some more of the wonderful writing that the children did.
Dear Naomi
Thank you so much for getting in touch. It's great to hear that Grandma continues to entertain and inspire. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your students' work - what lively, perceptive writers. Could you please let me know the name/number of your class and the postal address of your school so that I can respond and thank them for sharing their work.
Warm regards
Jenny Hessell

Wonderful Waiata!
Today we had a run through for the Powhiri at Waikawa Marae, with Rita who is one of the marae's tangata whenua. She talked to us about what would happen at each stage of the powhiri and then we had a practise altogether with Mrs Zydenbos leading us. Mrs Zydenbos will be coming to the marae with us and calling the response to the karanga. Mr Hewson will also be coming with us to make a Whaikorero, on behalf of us, the manuhiri.
These are 2 of the 3 waiata that we will be singing.

Meet our Class Librarians!
Here is our wonderful Room 16 Library team, working hard.
Lucy is sorting out the library cards.
Amelia is issuing the library books.
Dan is putting the returned books into the box, ready to be put back onto the shelves.
I interviewed the librarians.
What is the best thing about being a librarian?
Dan: Scanning the books because I like people smiling at me and saying thank you.
Amelia: Putting the books into the slot.
Lucy: You get to issue books.
Is there anything you find hard about being a librarian?
Dan: Scanning the wrong barcode because there is usually 2 barcodes!
Amelia: No nothing!
Lucy: Getting the book into the slot if the book is open!
What do you think being a librarian teaches you?
Dan: When you're older you will know all the skills if you want to be a librarian- like in Y5 or 6
Do you want to be a school librarian in Y5/6
Amelia: Yes because I think it's fun to see the smile on little kids faces
Lucy: Yes it's really easy and a great job.
Dan: Probably I'll think about it when I'm Year 5 or 6
